Shopping Malls in Bahrain About Hidden Gems in the Island State

When asked to enumerate top shopping destinations worldwide, most people would simply respond by pointing out popular examples such as London, New York, and Dubai. Many do not realize that such frequently mentioned shopping destinations are not necessary among the most exciting choices. Indeed, the shopping malls in Bahrain are truly top-notch; as such malls do not merely provide shoppers with great finds but also offer mall-goers an opportunity to indulge in the wonders of uniquely designed interiors. Without a doubt, Bahrain should be on top of one's list of global shopping destinations that are worth visiting.

Of course, those who are barely familiar with the island state would benefit from a quick rundown of some of the most notable shopping malls in Bahrain. As to be expected, the Bahrain Mall remains to be one of the most majestic of Bahrain's gifts to shoppers worldwide. Even before entering the mall, one's curiosity would immediately be piqued by the mall's design as it is patterned after an Arabic fortress. As to be expected, entering the mall is another jaw-dropping experience as the shops inside are not only varied but also seem to endlessly stretch past one's view.

As some have already realized after opting to visit Bahrain, the Dana Mall is another shopping center that is definitely worthy of praise. Featuring a traditional-looking exterior akin to the Bahrain Mall, the Dana Mall would also never fail to impress shoppers of all kinds. Upon closer scrutiny however, one would soon realize that the Dana Mall surpasses the Bahrain Mall in terms of elegance, as its walls and ceiling are seemingly made to please the most demanding royalties. Most importantly, boutiques, game centers, and even cinemas of all sorts completely fill the mall's vast interior.

Despite being much more contemporary in terms of design when compared to the previous examples, the Moda Mall is still breathtaking. Those who truly seek to experience luxury upon opting to visit Bahrain would definitely be pleased by the aforesaid mall, as it excels in allowing shoppers to experience a modern, if not cutting-edge, atmosphere of extravagance. Aside from giving patrons a chance to shop in a most luxurious manner, the Moda Mall also offers such shopping enthusiasts a chance to relax in the most lavish of means. Indeed, aside from being an exclusive shopping mall, the Moda Mall also functions as a five-star hotel.

A Perfect Celebration of Food in Dubai

While Dubai boasts a myriad of noteworthy cultural facets, only a few come close to its iconic cuisine. Those who have been to the great culinary event known as the Taste of Dubai would immediately agree that the seemingly simple opportunity of being able to experience Dubai's unique flavors should never be missed. Despite becoming aware of such an encouraging fact however, it is only to be expected that many would still be skeptical as to whether such a food-filled festivity warrants a visit to Dubai. So as not to miss a truly unique dining opportunity, those still in doubt should read on.

As it is highly praised as one of the best Dubai events, March 2012 would definitely be filled with excitement as the aforementioned food festival takes place. One of the main reasons as to why it is considered as the top attraction in Dubai during March, is that the festival brings forth both gastronomic and auditory pleasures. It should be pointed out though, that those behind the festival do not merely provide diners with a chance to eat while listening to suitable music, but they make it a point to showcase Dubai's best music artists so as to truly satisfy the crowd.

Aside from being an unforgettable dining experience, the Taste of Dubai is also touted as a memorable learning opportunity. While many are not aware, the festival also encompasses a myriad of accessible cooking lessons that should pique the interest of every food lover. Akin to the musical talents employed to intrigue diners, the chefs chosen to educate as well as entertain food enthusiasts are among the best in their profession. True cooking aficionados would surely recognize names such as Aldo Zilli and Richard Sandoval, and would truly be surprised upon realizing that such top chefs would directly interact with their fans.

When planning to attend global food festivals such as the Taste of Dubai, even the most enthusiastic food lovers would have to face a particular concern: how to entertain their children while also entertaining themselves. While many immediately give up upon realizing such a problem, those who spend a bit more time to learn more about the aforesaid gastronomic celebration would definitely be pleased with what they would find out: the festival also features a top-notch kid's area that would surely grab the attention of any child. Merely showing kids a picture of the massive play area would definitely make them want to go.

Ten Cafes in Chicago

Forget about Seattle, Chicago is actually the most caffeinated city in America. With average Chicagoans spending nearly three times the national average at coffeehouses, it's no surprise that the Windy City is home to some unique cafes. For those new to Chicago, you must pay patronage to the java gods by getting your caffeine buzz at least once from this list of Chicago's most aroma-arousing cafes and coffeehouses.

1. Earwax - (1561 N. Milwaukee - Wicker Park) - This un-aptly-named vegan brunch diner is just one of Wicker Park's peculiar places to score some joe. Don't let the name fool you, local hipsters speak highly of Earwax's bottomless cup of coffee. After you get your fix, check out the foreign film rental establishment below.

2. Mercury Cafe - (1505 W. Chicago - East Village) The enormous space within Mercury Café makes it a great place for gatherings of friends or other meetups. Or you can just isolate yourself and enjoy the tea, coffee, and espresso drinks available on their robust menu.

7. Filter - (1373-75 N. Milwaukee - Wicker Park) It disappeared for some time, but the new and improved Filter has once again found its place as a staple of Wicker Park coffee. Thrift store décor and plenty of couches add to the comfy lounge environment where you can often find patrons with their requisite laptops or groups of friends.

8. Caffe Streets - (1750 W. Division - Bucktown) The wooden interiors give Caffe a rustic vibe perfect for enjoying their specialty coffees from different roasters. There's no Wi-fi, but this only adds to the down-home atmosphere, along with the friendly baristas.

9. Intelligentsia - (3123 N. Broadway - Lakeview) They have multiple locations now, but the most well-known can be found along the busy Broadway Avenue in Lakeview. These guys take coffee seriously, actually developing their own while working alongside growers. But don't let the hoity-toity attitude fool you, this café is just as accessible to the common man.

10.Julius Meinl - (4363 N. Lincoln - Lincoln Square) This international roaster offers a selection of premium coffee blends from all over the world. Known for impeccable service, interesting food, and a vibe of sophistication, this is a great place for intimate conversation.

Great Little Secrets to Enhance Your Travel Experience

Travel is exciting, but it can also be stressful. Over the years, I have come across many little tips from others that have been helpful in minimizing the stress and allowing that once-in-a-lifetime trip to be the wonderful and exciting experience it should be.

I want to thank all the people who have given me great tip advice over the years, and also those who have shared their wonderful travel tips in magazines and books. Frequent and experienced travelers, listen up, too. These tips may also be new to you.

The Coffee Pot Trick

So you went to a fancy schmancy restaurant and you had a great meal, but you have quite a bit left over and you don't want to toss it. No problem! Before leaving the restaurant, ask for some aluminum foil. The next day simply heat up the leftover food on the warming surface of the hotel coffee maker. It works like a charm. Just make sure there's no H2O in the reservoir.

Oh No -- Forgot My Shaving Cream!

I hate when this happens. But no problem. Your hair conditioner can do double duty. Conditioner does a great job of softening up those whiskers, and makes for a nice, smooth shave. Just check the shower area of your bathroom for the free little bottle of conditioner.

If You Wear Glasses, You Have To Do This Before Leaving For The Big Vacation

Before you take off, have your optometrist write you out a current up-to-date prescription. If you damage your glasses or even lose them while you're on your trip, head over to a large store like Walmart or BJ's. They can simply call your doctor and have the prescription filled. That way you don't have to go through the hassle of visiting an optometrist and getting a new prescription.

Don't Lose Your Cell Phone - I LOVE THIS TIP!

Cell phones are such a necessity these days. How did we ever live without them? Most cell phones nowadays are also cameras. When you travel, take a picture of your hotel's business card and use it as the background on your phone screen. If you lose your phone and someone finds it, the hotel where you're staying is the first thing they'll see. If they're a good person, maybe they'll return it to the hotel. This is especially useful in foreign countries because the business card is in the local language.

Five Art and Architecture Destination in India

From lotus temple in Delhi to wondrous Taj in Agra and marvelous sculptures & painting at Elephanta Island, India has a great number of destinations which entice architecture-lovers from far corners of globe. Here's my list of India's top 5 places to admire artistic creations. The list, however, has not been endorsed by any magazine or survey.
Agra: It may seem obvious, but it's not without a reason why Agra in state of Uttar Pradesh tops my list of places for art-lovers. Home to Taj Mahal: one of Seven Wonders of World, Agra is India's most talked-about tourist place. Taj Mahal, with its unique blend of Persian, Islamic and Indian architecture styles, is one of the most attention-grabbing manmade monuments on this earth. Amazing work of stone-cutting, carvings, paintings and calligraphy on white marvels leave all the visitors stunned. Even the domes & structures alongside the main complex add to the architectural beauty of this wonder. Beyond the Taj, visitors can experience flawless Mughal architecture at Red Fort. Fatehpur Shikri and other ancient buildings in the city are also worth exploring.
Delhi: Nothing beats a Delhi trip if you're the one inclined towards arts & cultures. One of the oldest cities in the world has turned to be a vibrant metropolis in India, but its age-old architectures & grand history still has a charismatic charm and never fails to impress architecture-admirers. The city has a long list of historical monuments with many of them designated as UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. From forts to monuments to religious sites, the city is like a museum of master architecture work. Mammoth Red Fort, towering Qutub Minar, impressive structure of Rasatrapati Bhawan and unique design of Lotos temple is sure to leave folks breathless. You can visit to Akashrdham Temple to view amazing carving & paint work of modern artisans.
Ajanta-Allora Caves: Stunning structures made by rock-cutting, Ajanta Caves hold an immense collection of sculptures and artworks pertaining to great Bhuddhist religion. This includes some famous paintings too, which remind us of Sigiriya paintings in Sri Lanks. As old as 2nd century BCE, these cave monuments have been a dream destination for artisans and archeologists. They are a world heritage site by UNESCO and are must-visit tourist spot in Indian state of Maharashtra.
Mahabalipuram: Mahabalipuram is undisputedly the most picturesque town of South India in sense of architectural beauty. Monolithic rock curved temples are the center of attraction, which are architectural masterpieces founded by Pallava kings. Wonderful Dravidain architectures backed with unsurpassable history & spiritualism in Mahabalipuram keep art-lovers and history-admirers flocking the city year-round. There are eight rathas in the town, which are made of rock-cutting and named after five pandawas of Mahabhartha and their wife Drupadi.

Why Interesting Facts About the Grand Canyon?

The Grand Canyon is one of the world's most famous natural wonders and is a favourite attraction to visit for tourists. Before going to visit the attraction, it might be an idea to get to know the site a little better; why not wow your friends and family or simply other tourists with these titbits of information on one of the world's greatest natural wonders?
The Grand Canyon is Arizona's number 1 tourist attraction. This is not particularly surprising considering the widespread fame of the canyon, but with places like Monument Valley and the Four Corners monument to compete with, the Grand Canyon has surely earned its position at the top.
At 277 miles long and up to 18 miles wide it is one of the Natural Wonders of the World. The huge gorge is joined on the list by other natural wonders such as the Aurora Borealis, Mount Everest and the Great Barrier Reef.
Only 10% of visitors enter the North Rim. This part of the canyon still gives visitors spectacular views of the canyon but the more familiar vistas of the South Rim draw in the larger numbers.
The Grand Canyon Skywalk was completed in 2007 at a cost of $31 million. This is located on the West Rim and allows visitors to walk out on the glass-bottomed platform. The Skywalk does have amazing views, but unfortunately cameras are not allowed on it, so some people leave the Skywalk feeling disappointed. For the best views of the canyon it would be more advisable to take a helicopter ride and perhaps incorporate the Skywalk into that trip.
Humans lived in the Grand Canyon around 4,000 years ago. Those who have travelled deep into the canyon discovered a number of caves, and in these caves were artefacts that proved there had been human existence long ago. Animal figurines that were a few inches tall were found, and they were made mostly from willow or cottonwood twigs.
The canyon is populated by 5 Native American tribes: the Hopi, Navajo, Havasupai, Paiute and Hualapai tribes. The ancient tribes live around the canyon area and some are happy to integrate with tourists, showing visitors all about the history of their ancestors and the cultural practices that have been passed down through the ages.

Historical and Cultural Highlights of the Haute Savoie

Home to the world famous resort and its catered chalets, the ski resort of La Tania is a typical centre of Haute Savoie culture.
When you are off on your next skiing holiday you might like to think about the cultural background of your resort. La Tania is an example of the sort of centre that rewards an exploration of the area's history and culture. Nestled in the mountains of La Savoie, La Tania was a small hamlet half way between Courchevel and Méribel known locally as La Tagna. When you discover that this name means 'lair of the bears' in Savoyard Patois, you might not feel so snug in your cosy catered chalets. The ski resort of La Tania is based in the Tarentaise forests that were known for their bear population until the beginning of the 20th century, when they were driven out of the valley by the inhabitants.
History Highlights
The resort is part of the French Haute Savoie, which is rich in history. Between 1416 and 1847 the House of Savoy ruled the Duchy after Sigismund, the Holy Roman Emperor, granted the territory to Count Amadeus VIII. In the 15th century the duchy was made up of Moriana, Valle d'Aosta and the Piedmont. It soon expanded to the coastal area around Nice. Under Amadeus La Savoie became established as a cultural centre in art, architecture and literature long before the emergence of catered chalets. The ski resort of La Tania was a tiny village of little significance at this time but nonetheless has developed a strong Savoyard nature.
Between 1536 and 1559 the French had the upper hand during the two-decade occupation by King Francis I. A century later the Frankish influence was maintained under the leadership of Duke Charles Emmanuel II. Savoy was occupied from 1792 to 1815 by French Revolutionary forces, and finally in 1860 the duchy was annexed by France.
Language
In the Savoyard region a vernacular language developed, traces of which one might hear spoken around the catered chalets. The ski resort of La Tania is home to some of the 35,000 remaining speakers of this Patois.
Cuisine
Savoyard food is a rich cuisine based on potatoes, Savoyard cheeses, sausages and patés. There are plenty of opportunities within this resort for visitors to sample some of these tasty dishes. La Savoie is equally renowned for its ancient tradition of viticulture, producing some of the world's best wines from ancient times to the present day.

How Beauty of the Lake District?

The Lake District National Park in Cumbria is full of beautiful scenery that cannot be beaten pretty much anywhere else in Europe. The landscapes, rugged mountains, lakes and farmhouses are truly a mesmerizing sight which only those that have been can truly appreciate. There are around 880 square miles of beautiful scenery to explore. Since 1951 the area has gained National Park status which means the area is being conserved for all to appreciate its natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage. Anyone planning on visiting England for the first type should most definitely visit this great area or natural beauty known as the Lake District.

Sheep farming has been the main source of economy over recent years. Today sheep farming still remains a very important factor to the economy of The Lake District. The area attracts visitors from all around the world and this tourism is a serious boom to its economy. The region remains one of the main sources of granite and slate which is both used in the building industry. The quarrying has left is marks on the landscape but does not really ruin the landscapes.

English literature and The Lake District goes hand in hand with may famous authors putting their mark on the area. The first person to make its mark in terms of literature is the poet Thomas Gray. He was one of the first to visit then document his tour of the area in 1769. His account of the area is known as Gray's 'Journal of his Tour in the Lake District' was published in 1775 and went on to became one of the eighteenth-century's most popular and most read guides to the Lakes.

It was the English poet William Wordsworth which really put the lakes on the map. He moved to the now famous Dove Cottage in Grasmere. After years living in the area he wrote his 'Guide through the District of the Lakes' which was published in 1820. Today you can take a tour of Wordsworth's international collection of manuscripts, portraits, and valuables in the museum which has been named after him.

Beatrix Potter is another famous name associated with the area. Today she is remembered for artistic and literary skills in her writings. Most famously "The tale of Peter Rabbit" which was inspired by her visits to the area as a child. There is now a museum dedicated to Beatrix where you can see some of her illustrations and learn all about her life and love of nature. When she died she left most of her property to the National Trust.

The Lakes freshwater is great for watching otters, pikes and British sharks. There are many tours, events and activities which centre on and around the lakes. You can go on a cruise of Lake Windermere all year round except Christmas day. One cruise last for about three hours and includes a visit the aquarium, a steam railway and the World of Beatrix Potter. Some of the lake cruises originate from Victorian times.

How Optimize Your Time at Disney World?

ou are planning your family's experience of a lifetime at Disney World and want to make sure you get to see and do everything. However, you are beginning to wonder how that is possible with the limitless activities Disney seems to have. Rest assured. If you have a plan, you can enjoy all Disney has to offer, and maybe even a few extra things you did not know about.

Schedule

When heading to Disney World, make sure and schedule at least one day for each park you plan to attend, and do not forget Disney's water parks when creating your schedule. Trying to fit too many parks into one day can leave you and your family exhausted, and make you miss Disney happenings. Additionally, try and schedule at least one slow day during your Disney stay. This will allow you to go back and spend extra time at your favorite park, enjoy your hotel or resort pool, spend some time shopping, or enjoy some of Disney's extra activities.

Tickets

Choosing the right kind of ticket can make your Disney visit a true experience. Although you may plan for one park a day, you never know when you will have a need to return to a park. If you are staying at a Disney World resort, you will have the ability to take advantage of early or late hours in specific parks. A Park Hopper option on your ticket gives you the flexibility to move freely between one park and another throughout your stay, allowing you to maximize your time.

Transportation

You will hear much about the fabulous transportation provided by Disney World, particularly if you are staying on a Disney resort. However, one extra way you can have flexibility for your family is to rent a car. If you are staying at a resort, parking is free there and at any Disney property. With your own vehicle, you will not have to be at the mercy of park transportation.

Dining

The food at Disney World is fantastic and you know your family will want to experience it often. However, while the atmosphere and the food are enjoyable, the lines are not. Even when you have reservations you may still spend time waiting. Make sure and plan accordingly before your trip. Know which restaurants you plan to visit so you can maximize your time. If you know you when and where you will be eating, you can also plan to eat a large resort or hotel breakfast or bring your own snacks.

Play

When you arrive at your park each morning, head to the most popular attractions first. As the park becomes more crowded, you will know you have already had the opportunity to experience the favorite rides and events. Another option is to check our Disney's Fast Pass system. This will let you set a specific time to visit an attraction so you are not held up in lines.

Seven Things Not To Miss In c and Chile

Iguassu falls are the most spectacular waterfalls I have ever seen. Cascading across the borders of 3 countries, they truly have to be seen to be believed. They are best appreciated from both sides which offer a different perspective. On the Argentina side, you get a real close and personal view with the unique opportunity to take a jet boat ride right until the falls whereas a panoramic vista of the whole falls is the highlight on the Brazilian side. The falls are located deep in the jungle and you can see agoutis, coatis, toucans and many other tropical birds; for me, it was a real highlight of my Argentina holiday.

Of course a few days in cosmopolitan Buenos Aires is a must on any Argentine holiday. The main highlights for me are San Telmo, the tango quarter with its bohemian atmosphere and flea markets, La Boca for its lively colourful streets and football stadium, Recoleta cemetery where heroic Eva Peron rests. There is memorable night life with restaurants aplenty down by the port with great value all you can eat red meat feasts washed down with a bottle of Malbec.

El Calafate is home to the world-famous and spectacularly stunning scenery of the glaciers and is a real must-see if your thinking of heading on some Argentina travel tours. Perito Moreno glacier is the most famous with chunks of ice literally just crashing off loudly into the glacial lake below and you can even put on some crampons and hike across it. The world's largest glacier Upsala is incredible at three times the size of Buenos Aires and worth sailing up to witness its sheer magnificence.

Trekking to the "Base de Torres" was my most memorable experience in all of Patagonia. The peaceful serenity is out of this world with breathtaking scenery of snow-capped peaks in every direction and glacial lakes. There is even the odd llama hanging out in Torres del Paine National Park which means "Blue Towers" in an old local indigenous language.

Ushuaia is the most southern city in the world and is the gateway to Antarctica. It's affectionately known as "el fin del mundo" which translates as the end of the world. It boasts amazing natural beauty in the Tierra del Fuego national park which is ideal for hiking and an amazing array of sea life on the Beagle channel where Charles Darwin sailed. I experienced a real sense of feeling very far from anywhere at the bottom of the world.

Culturally speaking, I found Salta to offer the most unique experience as its close to the Bolivian border. If you want a taste of typical South America during your Argentina holiday, you're sure to find it here; a Spanish colonised town with its friendly locals ready to chat, churches, plazas, courtyards and cobbled stone grid like streets and markets. Surprisingly there are unusual rock formations dotted about the moon type landscape and you can see large salt flats.

The coastal town of Valparaiso in Chile with its funicular and higgledy piggledy coloured houses balanced precariously on the steep slopes is unlike anywhere else I have been on my other holidays in Argentina. Travelling up and down admiring views far and wide makes a lovely day out from nearby capital Santiago de Chile.

Dressing Down For Apres Ski

When you are working and living your day-to-day life, one of the last weather conditions you want to experience is snow. However, many people pay good money to take skiing and snowboarding trips every year and be surrounded by such conditions. Of course, in the right environment snow can be a lot of fun!

A great factor to look forward to with such a winter holiday is the après ski. It creates a really good atmosphere and is a great way to mix with others who you would normally zoom past down the slope, or perhaps they fly past you when you are sitting in the snow having fallen over countless times! You can end up making great friends with like-minded people.

Après ski for many people is one of the most important parts of their holiday. They want to feel comfortable and have a relaxing, fun time after a cold and tiring time on the slopes. If you like to socialize and have a good time, but wish you did not have to get all dressed up to go out, après ski gatherings are the perfect place for you to be. You need to balance comfort, warmth and style if you want to have it, but this is probably one of the only places that wearing a sweater on a night out is acceptable!

Trends and fashion can differ depending on what country or part of a country you go to. In the USA, people who go skiing in the west in Aspen and Vail tend to dress up more than people who ski in New England and eastern areas. They tend to be more practical and casual.

You are able to find some great après ski outfits on the market for those who just cannot picture themselves having to dress 'ordinarily'. You can obtain jumpers and boots that are practical but also feature elements of fashion so you can feel warm and on trend. This is the same case for both men and women and after having spent a whole day on a slope you will be a lot less bothered about what you look like.

Some Place Worth Visiting

Over looked by the magnificent Scrabo Tower, Newtownards is the largest town in the Ards Borough. With a population of exceeding 27,000 people, it is viewed in the large town class. It features a big diversity of shops and retail stores, coupled with quite a lot of bars and eating establishments for local town people and visitors likewise. It lies in between the nearby towns of Bangor and Comber.

It is a sprawling town, unfolding from the Craigantlet hills, almost to the outskirts of nearby Bangor and it is only a short distrance to the east coast. It has an active town centre featuring a very busy main street surrounded by lots of attractive shops.

New developments have seen the planning for huge multi million shopping centres, along the Comber road, establishing Newtownards as a favourite town for visitors and a popular base to live. Many Ards residents travel back and forth to Belfast for work.

Newtownards boasts a decent number of local attractions, including the distinguished Scrabo Tower. In fact the town of Newtownards is overlooked by the 100-foot (30 m) high Scrabo Tower. The tower is 41 metres high, and was raised as a memorial to Charles Stewart, who was the third Marquess of Londonderry, in acknowledgement of his interest in the condition of his tenants during the great potato famine. Scrabo Tower is normally open to visitors and features a historical exhibition. The basalt topped sandstone hill at Scrabo is among the dominating features of the north Down area. The tower presently resides in Scrabo Country Park which features lovely woodland walks and a chance to take in the local scenery.

On the Bangor road, you will find The Somme Heritage Centre. The centre is a popular visitor magnet - it depicts the truth of the Great War and its consequences on the Northern Ireland people at that time. The centre marks the participation of the 36th (Ulster) and 16th (Irish) divisions in the Battle of the Somme and offers displays and facts on the entire Irish contribution to the First World War.

Also, you shouldn't miss taking a drive along the shores of Scrabo Lough which leads you down to the quaint town of Portaferry. That is highly recommended.

How Making Geography an Adventure With School Trips to Thailand?

As the study of the Earth and its human and natural phenomena, geography is certainly a subject that can be enhanced by school trips: the chance to experience different terrains, climates, and societies first-hand can bring the subject to life for students. With its tropical climate and varied landscapes, and its urban centres, farming regions, and hill tribes, Thailand is an ideal destination on every level. Read on for an introduction to what your students could experience on a geography-focused visit to this inspiring country.

Thailand's geography: an introduction

Those preparing for school trips may want to furnish their students with some facts about their destination before leaving. Thailand covers an area of 514,000 square kilometres, and its central, northern and northeastern regions form part of a large floodplain, with the Chao Phraya River at its heart. This made it an attractive area to early settlers, who were able to develop abundant rice cultivation. In later periods it was an important trade crossroads on both land and sea routes, which contributed to a rich flourishing of civilisation. Much of the country is bordered by land, with Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia as neighbouring countries, but the Gulf of Thailand and the extension of the country along part of the Malay Peninsular mean that the south has extensive coastlines. The shape of the country is often likened to that of an elephant's head (the elephant is the national animal), with the peninsular region forming the trunk.

Land and produce

Thailand has a tropical climate with two monsoon seasons per year, and much of the land is fertile. The northern region is mountainous, while the northeast is generally more dry, and 26% of the land is forest - it was once much more so. Due to the varied landscapes a variety of produce can be grown - the country's main product is rice, but it is often grown in rotation with corn and potatoes; other crops include tomatoes, pineapples, sunflowers and tobacco. Salt is dried in the south, and the country has significant fish, chicken and pork industries. Natural resources include tin, natural gas, rubber, timber and lead. Visiting any of the regions where these are produced will help demonstrate to students on school trips the interconnectedness of seemingly disparate elements of geography - climate, land, industry and society.

Exploring the city

Bangkok is likely to be the starting point for most school trips, and is a fascinating city for geography students in many regards. Home to 12,000,000 people, it is a densely populated modern metropolis that has expanded rapidly since its founding as the capital in 1782. This makes it an interesting place to study the effects of growth on an urban centre.

School Trips to China

Mandarin is becoming ever more popular as a Modern Foreign Language option, particularly for learners with an interest in business careers or global politics, history and culture. For such students, there are plenty of great opportunities to become strong Mandarin speakers in the classroom, while school trips are the perfect way to consolidate and enhance that learning.

Visiting China allows students to immerse themselves in their chosen MFL and to see how that language is used in everyday social contexts - as well as letting them experience Chinese culture first-hand. Here are just a few of the potential highlights of MFL school trips to Beijing, the capital city of this fascinating country.

Legendary attractions

China's historic highlights fascinating to explore. School trips enable students to see these wonders for themselves while perhaps discussing their significance in Mandarin - which also provides good cross-curriculum links for history students. While in Beijing, your group can visit the Forbidden City, China's imperial seat of power dating from the days of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Exploring the grounds, buildings and chambers of this astonishing palace complex is a good opportunity to practice architecture and building-related vocabulary. China's star attraction, of course, is the Great Wall. An easy trip out of Beijing, the Wall is a testament to China's ancient prowess and an unforgettable site to visit - and a fascinating subject to design language lessons around.

Tomorrow's world

One factor in Mandarin's increasing global popularity is its relevance in world economics and industry. MFL school trips are ideally placed to make the most of opportunities to consolidate industry and business-related language, whilst witnessing modern Chinese business and production in action. A visit to one of Beijing's factories or company buildings can provide just that.

Art and culture

Beijing is also a great cultural city, and your group can visit the National Museum of Art, attend an opera or acrobatics show at one of the city's theatres, or explore preserved homes of important writers like Lu Xun. All of these offer excellent opportunities for vocabulary expansion and discovery of Chinese culture to those on school trips.

Great shopping and food

China boasts a wealth of cuisines, from Mongolian to Cantonese, and the capital is a great place to sample them all. Dining out can double as a language lesson as students practise their restaurant vocabulary - and if they ask for a Chinese menu they can practise their reading skills too. Students will also appreciate the chance to shop on vibrant Wangfujing Street, where they can visit Western-style malls alongside more traditional Chinese shops, and talk to shopkeepers in Chinese. With so many friendly faces and fun ways to spend time, learners are sure to come away with a deepened enthusiasm for, and appreciation of, Chinese language and culture.

How Air Travel in Brazil?

Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world with territory spanning across 3 million square miles (8 million square kilometers). Needless to say, getting around Brazil takes time, and air travel is the most efficient way to minimize travel time so that you can spend more of your Brazil holiday relaxing with a caipirinha on Brazilian beaches or cruising on the Amazon River or trekking through the Amazon jungle.

Airports

The principal airport hubs are São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. International flights arrive and depart from Guarulhos International Airport (GRU) in São Paulo, as well as Rio de Janeiro, Recife, and Salvador. For domestic and regional service, flights arrive and depart from Congonhas- São Paulo Airport (CGH) and serve Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Brasilia. Other important airport hubs in Brazil are: Salvador (SSA), Recife (REC), Fortaleza (FOR), Brasilia (BSB), Porto Alegre (POA), and Curitiba (CWB).

Travelers moving by air through Brazil will find that the Rio de Janeiro is the hub for domestic flights. In Rio, Galeão-Antonio Carlos Jobim (GIG) is the internal airport, and Santos Dumont is the domestic and regional airport. The shuttle flight between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro is just under 1 hour. Between Rio and other popular Brazil destinations, flight times are as follows: Foz do Iguaçu - 3 hours, Manaus - 5 hours, Porte Alegre - 2 hours, Salvador - 2 hours.

Carriers and Passes
Brazil has 3 main carriers: TAM, Varig, and Vasp. Low cost carriers include: Gold, Fly, and Ocean Air. These carriers usually sell an airpass, which is a good investment for travelers who will be traveling to multiple destinations within Brazil or South America. Passes are sold outside Brazil and are available to non-residents who have a return ticket. Usually passes are valid for a limited number of days and are the price varies by mileage.

Booking
It is generally a good idea to book flights well in advance, as last-minute bookings for international and domestic flights can get very expensive. Flights costs can also get quite expensive if booking directly through airline companies. Online travel agencies, such as Expedia or Travelocity, usually offer the most competitive prices for flights to Brazil.

Transfers
If you have booked your Brazil tours through a travel agency, you will usually be picked up from the airport for the transfer to your hotel or lodge; the transfer agent will have your name on a sign. If not, you can catch a taxi or bus outside the airport baggage area. Metered taxis are the safest option, and these are identifiable by their marked roof lights. Look for fares on the meter or on a fare chart on the rear side window.

Seven Things You Might Not Know About Chicago

Most people are somewhat familiar with the great museums, restaurants and cultural opportunities that the city has to offer. Following are 7 things you might not know about Chicago.

1. THE WILLIS TOWER, formerly the Sears Tower, is the tallest building in the United States and the Western hemisphere. It rises 110 stories and stands 1,450 feet tall. The antenna atop the building extends the total height to 1729 feet. The building contains 3.8 million square feet of combined office and retail space. A 104 car, high-speed elevator system is operated with the help of 80 miles of elevator cable. From the Skydeck observation platform, you can see Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.

2. THE MERCHANDISE MART is the world's largest commercial building. Built by the Marshall Field family, the building was completed in 1920. It takes up 2 full city blocks, has 25 floors and up until 2008, had its own zip code. Construction of the 4.2 million gross square feet of interior space required 4 million cubic yards of cement, 60,000 tons of steel and 29 million bricks. More than 10 million people visit the building each year.

3. THE CHICAGO RIVER IS DYED GREEN every St. Patrick's Day. In celebration of the holiday, spectators line the river to watch 40 pounds of food coloring turn the river a bright Irish green. There is said to be a little luck of the leprechaun as the orange-colored dye goes into the river and magically starts to turn green. After a few passes of a speed boat, the propeller stirs the dye and produces the bright green effect.

4. THE BOB NEWHART SHOW was a popular situation comedy show of the 1970s. Dr. Bob Hartley and his wife Emily lived in apartment 523. Their building was based on the facade of the Thorndale Beach North Condominiums located at 5901 N. Sheridan Road in the upscale Chicago neighborhood of Edgewater.

5. THE HISTORICAL ROUTE 66 which was the first paved highway across America started at Grant Park across from the Art Institute of Chicago. It ran southwest from Chicago to Los Angeles until it became obsolete when the Interstate Highway System was started under the Eisenhower Administration. Today, portions of Route 66 remain functional and are part of the National Scenic Highway System.

6. THE CHICAGO CUBS have not won a World Series since they beat the Detroit Tigers in 1908. They actually made it to the World Series in 1910, 1918, 1929, 1932, 1935, 1938 and 1945, but came out on the losing end every time. They have not been back to the World Series since - a stretch of 66 years.

7. THE TWINKIE was invented by James Alexander Dewar of the Continental Baking Company in 1930. The original version of the "Golden Sponge cake with Creamy Filling" had a banana filling. During WWII, bananas were in short supply and the iconic pastry switched to a vanilla creme. The name came from a billboard that Dewar saw advertising "Twinkle Toe Shoes." There is no truth to the urban legend that the Twinkie was just as edible if it was consumed in 20 years after it was baked as it was the day after it was baked is probably attributable to the fact that it contains no unstable dairy products. The product may still be edible after a few weeks, but the spongy cake and soft cream will likely be hard and somewhat stale.
